Victory Of Good Over Evil
Dussehra is the most popular festival in India. It is celebrated all over India. Dusshera comes from the “Dush” or ten and “Hara” means defeat. The ten headed king Ravan was defeated by lord Rama.
From past several years I have been regularly visiting Mysore during Dussehra festival. I am still not able to understand why the effigies of Ravan are burned by the selfish politicians. My questions is when there are so many Ravanas around us whom are we burning?
During the Dussehra function in Mysore I was discussing with a scholar regarding the significant of the Dussehra festival. He explained very beautifully, it is the victory of good over evil; one has to hate evil not Ravan. The ten headed king Ravan represents all that is evil. He is the representation of the six negativities in the heart: lust, anger, greed, pride, envy and illusion. He also represents arrogance and imperiousness. The burning effigies of Ravana mean burning all the evil within us. By this we are all asked to burn the evil within us. On the other side there is inspiration from Lord Rama to follow the path of truth and goodness. One should bear in mind the instance of Ravana and contemplate that though Ravana was powerful; he was destroyed for his evil way of life.
King Ravana is dead long back & burning of effigy has a little meaning for us. Lord Rama and King Ravana are both living within us. When we live pure life in thought, words & deeds, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness & absence of malice we express Rama within us but when we live in arrogance, pride, anger, harshness and hypocrisy, we are expressing Ravana.
I was recollecting the song from popular Hindi movie Roti, yaar hamari baat suno, aisa ek insaan Suno, jisne paap na kiya ho jo papi na ho….
How can these power hunger & selfish politicians burn the effigies of Ravan when they are following him all their life. Hurting the sentiments of the people has become a new trend these days. May it be media, a vote bank leader or a religious leader.Let’s follow the goodness of the epics and do not play politics with religion. Let Dussehra be the end of any evil that remains in our hearts.
We all know that desire is the genuine nature of human being. But when it exceeds, then breeds the greed & this greed transforms into evil ways. Sometimes we think why is there so much evil & how can we fight this? Generally human beings by nature are not greedy. Everyone is basically good. People become greedy gradually due to the failure of the moral sense. To combat the evil power, people should arm them with the moral values they need so that in their lives they do not turn further into the monsters. Everybody in the world should learn to love, to share, to be considerate, to be respectful, to be selfless & to be useful to the society.
Splendor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, absence of malice, and absence of pride; these are the qualities of those endowed with divine virtues. Hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance; these are the marks of those who are born with demonic qualities, O Arjuna. (16.04)
