Death Penalty For Rapists
Rape, the word itself sends across chills down the spine. Politicians, citizens & even the Delhi’s police chief are demanding the death penalty for rapists over the gang-rape of a 23-year-old student on a school bus in the Delhi city. The National capital Delhi has become the most unsafe place for girls where one rape happens almost everyday.
Member of Parliament Sushma Swaraj, leader of the main opposition BJP party, also called for rapists to be hanged. The BJP leader has ignited the debate of death penalty for rapists.
New Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar said, we will seek the most severe punishment of life imprisonment for the culprits and we will send a proposal to the government for the death sentence for rapists.
If I am not wrong the demand for death penalty for rapists was also made by senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani in 1998, then Union Home Minister. He said nothing less than the death penalty should be awarded to convicted rapists. Raping a woman is a much more heinous crime than murder since rape reduces a woman to a state of a living corpse,
In spite of political debates India is third worst offender in rape cases in the world leaving behind countries like Sri Lanka, Jordan and Argentina, According to latest data of the Union Home Ministry suggest. Ahead of India are only the United States and South Africa. There has been over 30 per cent increase in rape cases in 2010 over the previous year, According to a report released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
So many questions running through my mind, when we will have more stringent laws against rapists in our country? Why can’t we think above the candlelight marches? Is it possible to implement Islamic law (sharia lawas) for rapists?
Does any one remember that fourteen centuries ago Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) ordered death penalty (stone to death) to rapists? I am not demanding an Islamic law in a democratic country; I know it is very difficult to adopt the Sharia Laws in our country. But at least in rape related issues we can adopt the Islamic laws. There is no doubt that to a certain extent criminal punishment in Islam is more severe than many systems around but many scholars agree that harsh punishments will stick in people's minds and deter them from committing the crimes.
I will not be wrong to say that the current judicial system in our country is too lenient on sex offenders. We all want our Government to make stringent laws and speedy action against the rapists. But unfortunately in our country rape carries a maximum punishment of 7 to 10 years in prison, while the death penalty is restricted to rare cases of murder & terrorism.
In our country it takes decades to punish rapists. Justice delayed is justice denied. Let us raise our voice against the present rape incident, let us think above the candlelight marches and start a movement to bring amendment in the existing laws to hang the rapists. There should be a death penalty for rapists.
