Mahatma Gandhi - Icon Of Peace & Nonviolence
Today the world is celebrating the 141st birth day of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation. The UNO has commemorated the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi as a non-violence day.
It cannot be denied that Mahatma Gandhi was one of the first to offer a wake-up call to humanity by stressing the philosophy of nonviolence. Mahatma Gandhi taught the world a new method of struggle, political warfare and a new kind of diplomacy.
During my school days I was always asking the question to my teachers & friends, Why Was Mahatma Gandhi Never Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? One of my teacher said, Mahatma Gandhi lives in the hearts of billions of Indians and non-Indians which is the biggest credit earned by him. This is bigger than any award, even Noble Peace Prize. Now I understand those true words of wisdom.
After reading lot many books on Indian history & renowned historian’s views all I can understand is Mahatma Gandhi did far more than bring about independence. He revolutionized the political outlook of the world. A campaign of peace achieved more than any one rebel group or army could ever hope to.
There may be a number of world leaders who dedicated their lives for the cause of peace and won the Nobel Peace prize, but comparing Mahatma Gandhi with them is just like comparing a candle light with sun. Mahatma Gandhi should have been selected for the Nobel Peace Prize more than half a century back.
Mahatma Gandhi, who showed the world that anything can be achieved through 'Satyagrah' (passive resistance) and non-violence, was nominated for the Noble Peace Award in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and finally a few days before he was martyred in January 1948. As Mahatma Gandhi was not awarded the prize in 1948, the committee decided to give no award that year on the ground that there was no "suitable living candidate".
It is very shocking to know that Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace should have been the ideal candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, until now, the Committee has not revealed the exact reasons for his omission. Statute 8 of the Nobel Foundation states, "The deliberations, opinions and proposals of the Nobel Committee with the award of prizes may not be made public or otherwise revealed."
The only consoling factor is that the glaring omission of Gandhi was later regretted by the Nobel Committee itself. In 1989, the chairman of the Committee said, "The Peace Prize to the Dalai Lama was in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi."
I like to quote the words of the historian Jens Arup Seip, acting as the committee’s advisor in 1947 and 1948, said, Gandhi had left such an immense ethical mark on the world that he could “only be compared to the founders of religions.”
Nobel Peace Prize chronicler Gray suggests a “curious omission” when men like Martin Luther King Jr. (the 1964 laureate who acknowledged Gandhi as his mentor) and 1960 Nobel Prize winner Albert Luthuli (who applied Gandhi’s principles in South Africa) are duly honoured but Gandhi, “the first to employ non-violence in a political context, was never awarded the Peace Prize”.
When we think of peace, the one person that always reminds us is Mahatma Gandhi. The omission of Noble Peace Award to Mahatma Gandhi is a black mark for Nobel committee and as a lover of peace and also as an Indian we knew that Mahatma Gandhi doesn’t need any award to prove that he worked for peace, because he dedicate his entire life for peace and if the Nobel Prize was awarded to Mahatma Gandhi, then it would have been an honor for Nobel Committee to award the prize to such a great person, The symbol of Peace.
Although Mahatma Gandhi was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, his legacy lives on. His message "that non-violence and peace are twin weapons for the brave" is still being spread about the world.
If a ‘Person of the Millennium” – a bigger award than the Nobel Prize is instituted, Mahatma Gandhi would certainly become the first person to be conferred with that rarest of the rare honour.
Always aim at complete Harmony of thought & word & deed. Always aim at purifyng your thoughts & everyting well be well. (Mahatma Gandhi)
