Do Not Mix Religion With Politics
The world’s biggest democratic exercise got under way, as India began voting in a marathon month long general election that looks certain to produce another fragile coalition government.
The poll is being held in five phases between April 23 to May 13 so that all of India’s 714 million registered voters can cast their ballots at more than 828,804 polling stations across the country.
The fragmentation of Indian politics is part of the natural evolution of democracy in country with 22 official languages, six main religions, and hundreds of different ethnic groups.
Results are expected on May 16.According to the Opinion Polls no single party is expected to win a majority in the 543 seat Lok Sabha.
Since 2004 election, India has been ruled by an ungainly coalition led by the Congress Party. I feel at least this time, our country should have a strong and stable government which will last for five full years. We had enough of unstable & coalition Government in the recent past.
India cannot afford several years of political stagnation as it struggles to provide basic infrastructure, education, healthcare and jobs for a population of 1.1 billion, 880 million of whom still live on less than $2 a day.
Shri M S Gurupadaswamy, The only living Kannadiga who was the member of the first Lok Sabha which was elected in 1952, Say’s ,Any person who lived during Independence will never consider this as politics. Everywhere there is a cynicism about present day politicians. Every party is communal and caste biased. Today’s MPs are just wind bags, dunderheads and do nothing for the country. While a few are corrupt, a few have criminal backgrounds. What can you expect from these kinds of men? I am sorry to say that this is nothing but the progressive decline and fall of democracy in this country.
We have a nation but there is no national spirit. There is a democratic system but it has no values. It is politics without principles. We are witnessing commerce without morality and have been imparting education without ethics. Ideology and morality are the greatest casualties of the present day democratic system. All the parties say that they are secular. But while selecting candidates, they look at the caste factor and field caste leaders. We need leaders who would strengthen the country rather than divide it.
India has always been a secular country and it should remain like that. Without oxygen, we cannot survive. The same way, India will not and cannot survive without secularism. Communalism is like a virus that spreads cancer. Once it starts attacking one area, it will spread fast.
What should be done to prevent the virus from spreading? The politicians should not interfere in religion. It is as simple as that. In India, politics and religion cannot go together. Politicians should not try to mix politics and religion.
M Abdul Ali , The prince of Arcot Say’s Religion is the only thing that divides Indians now. Tell me are we fighting for any industry? Are we fighting for food? Are we fighting for developmental work? We do not fight saying, we have no food, give us food, we have no clothes, give us clothes, we have no shelter, give us shelter. The Constitution says that the government should provide all Indians with free education. So, give us education. Nobody shouts or fights for these things. The politicians also do not want to educate people. If people are educated, they cannot be fooled and the politicians know that for sure.
Most cruelties in this world take place in the name of religion. If people are taught that religion is not as important as it is made out to be, The political parties and organizations won’t be able to wield their power.
But as people we should strive for a society where religion does not play a dominant role. Instead more stress should be given to developing fundamental human values that are universal everywhere. There should be education against the irrelevance of religion, caste, class segregation, racialism and prejudice.
The society should be value-based and not religion-based. There should be no Hindus, no Christians, no Muslims and no Sikhs; there should only be good people and bad people.
