Fear Of failure In Exams
Two girls took their lives in Bangalore on Saturday, the day second puc results were announced. One fearing the outcome of the result, the other because she had failed. Asha the 18 year old daughter of Hemanna committed suicide at their home fearing a poor exam result.
Family members said Asha had been tense over her results for many days.
According to the police, Asha committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan. The police have recovered a suicide note in which the deceased had written that she is depressed and was taking this extreme step.
Unlike in the US, it’s not a faulty gun law that’s killing Indian kids. Here, we have another way to kill our children. It’s called exams. Say’s school counselor Anita Rampal.
At least twenty six students ended their lives across the country, in metros and in villages, on May ninth alone. And all the suicides were attributed to examinations.
The latest National Crime Records Bureau statistics reflect the horrifying trend. In 2008, 5,857 students committed suicide across India. And these are just the official figures.
Bangalore Police Commissioner said, the incidents of children committing suicide because of examination stress often do not get reported as traumatized parents choose to keep the issue under wraps.
Suicides are the symptoms of a much larger malaise, a flawed system of education. After all, for every student who commits suicide, there are ten others who have attempted it, said Harish Shetty, president of the Counselors Association of India.
Today’s student does not only carry the burden of clearing his / her exams, but rather of excelling with as high percentages as possible. Be it parents, teachers or other classmates, one is praised and branded as good only when he / she scores 90 & above per cent.
The main reason for students committing suicide is, students think that because I’m feeling depression, I should commit suicide. Also because they have read and heard of such stories where board students have committed suicide. So when they read such news or hear from others, they start thinking that, what will happen if I fail in exam? What my parents will think of me? How would I show my face to my teachers?. And as they ask such questions to themselves, they feel the severe depression and committing suicide is the only way they can think of during such mental depression, and they commit suicide. Their basic fear remains in the question “What will be my future?”. And this forces them to take such an extreme step.
Every year after 10 th or 12 th exam results, students are committing suicide. For that I believe somewhere their elders are responsible, some time their teachers also, who never told them that life always gives second chance to fight against the fears of failure.
The teachers & specially parents should discuss with their children and understand their problems. I believe that communication is best medicine for depression, after exams and results if you come to know that your kid just passed with less marks. Don’t scold them, instead of that inspire them by saying that don’t worry everything will be fine, try harder in your next exam. This way you can come emotionally close to them, they are precious. Understand them by spending quality time.
Parents should become friends of their child. Because the student who feel depression or have negative thoughts about exams and as the results are near their depression level increases, their negative emotions increase and because of this they don’t hesitate from taking a negative step such as committing suicide. If parents do really create a friendly atmosphere at home, students won’t have a chance to take an extreme step.
If parents have some advice to give, they shouldn’t just start advising. Rather, they should start with something that their son / daughter likes to talk about. And once he / she is in a good conversation with them, they should deliver their advise in such a way that they don’t consider it as an advise.
This way we can save our kids. Only need is to communicate with them, understand their problems, and try to solve them. Life is so beautiful. Give them example that everyone is born on earth to do specific task, everyone is special. So, don’t worry and let them make their own way to success.
My message to all the students is Just believe that this exam is not the final result of your entire life. This is just a part of it. There is a long future awaits you. And even if you can’t score good marks, do not bother, because only good score Marks sheet is not your final recognition. Thomas Alva Edison, Bill Gates, Sachin Tendulkar are few examples of the same. You can still make wonders in your life without a certificate. So just leave the fears behind and enjoy your exams.
