India Is Truly Shining .
The great Indian festival of elections has ended on an awesome note. The final results of general elections 2009 have gone beyond the wildest expectations of the election pundits.
The UPAled by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi & the prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh stormed its way back to the power ,by securing close to an absolute majority in the 543 – member Lok Sabha.
It’s a vote for Dr Manmohan Singh & the UPA, Nobody could predict such a clear mandate, not the experts, not the number crunchers, not the psephologists .The collective judgment of the people of India has proved many soothsayers, sycophants & messiahs of caste & religion based politics wrong. Indeed whatever be the constraints Secularism has come to stay in our country.
Till Friday evening, the smaller parties were drawing up a list of the demands they would make from the bigger national ones in return for their support since everyone was convinced that neither congress nor the BJP would get enough seats. A few hours later, when the electronic voting machines yielded their secrets, those fantasies were shattered.
The kingmakers are out .There is only one king in this election & that’s Dr Manmohan Singh, the prime ministerial candidate of the Congress led UPA that won with a decisive margin, belying predictions of a hung parliament. Now the long & twisted wish list of kingmakers lie in tatters as they wake up to the post-poll reality.
Victory for the Congress is a clear sign that the people are moving away from ramshackle coalition governments. In an environment of economic uncertainty, the people of India voted for a combination that promised stability & performance..
I am very happy that the people of our country have totally rejected communalism. It was not just politicians, but went beyond that. They have shown that Hindus along with Muslims & other minorities, have rejected communal forces. They have shown that there is no place for such violence & this has increased the country’s status & dignity in the world. I can proudly say that India is truly shining now .
Dr Manmohan Singh has been a shining example of honesty & incorruptibility. He may not be a flamboyant or charismatic leader but an image of sobriety & personal integrity, Dr Manmohan Singh has proplled the UPA to a stunning victory. He is acceptable to all, even foreign nations.
The victory also signals the coming of age of Rahul Gandhi. He has proved to be an astute planner & organizer & his decision to go it alone in UP & Bihar appears to paid off.
According to Mr Shiv Visvanathan , Social Scientist “Nature, history & the electorate has given a provisional “yes” to the Congress. This election has no finality. It is more like an interval within a movie. The action will begin”.
People always ask for development & this can be achieved when the government has the definite vision & politicians are a healthy blend of integrity & young ideas. In addition to urban or rural issues, people should reach out to the grassroots. And this can be achieved only through positive politics.
We still need new theories of justice , sustainability,& plurality ,no party has created this. The electorate has only created a space of clarity. It is also asking the Congress to complete the experiments it began.
With the Congress’ huge win comes huge responsibility. Immediate attention must be on policies to fight back the economic downturn .Stimulating the infrastructure sector . The situation in India’s neighborhood is extremely worrying & needs a sure touch. At a difficult time, our people have voted for stability.
Mr Joginder Singh , Former director CBI say’s ‘In view of the promises made during the elections, the government’s agenda will be complex & heavy. The most nagging & destruction problem facing the country is corruption, which regrettably found no mention in the manifesto of any political parties’.
The wisdom of the Indian voter has been remarked upon. Time & again, whether in the cities or in far-off rustic hamlets, educated or unlettered, old or young the voter has shown an intrinsic common sense in his & her collective will. Once again the voters have said it loud & clearly, even if the pundits failed to see a wave. There is a message in this for all parties. As for the winners , they must now begin to work to honour this mandate.
Aristotle once said ‘ three groups spend other people’s money, Children, thieves & politicians. All three need supervision ‘
Lets hope the new government will supervise itself & do a good job of it.
