Asking The Right Questions !

 

Questions allow us to make sense of the world. They are the most powerful tools we have for making decisions and solving problems, for inventing, changing and improving our lives as well as the lives of others. Questioning is central to learning and growing. (McKenzie)

Last Sunday I visited my friends house, He is a professor in Bangalore university.

Good Morning ! All of a sudden a young man wished professor . My friend introduced me & said He is my student , recently passed post graduation in first class.Working in a private company , applied for research scholar post in our university. Very smart boy, said professor.

The young man politely asked, Sir will you kindly tell me the details of my interview,

Professor started giving a lecture, How can I pass the information to you, I am not supposed to disclose. Always try to ask the right questions. Dear boy Let me share a joke,

John and Peter are walking from religious service.

John wonders whether it would be all right to smoke while praying,

Peter says, why don’t you ask the Priest ?

John goes up to the Priest & asks “ Father , May I smoke while I pray ?”

The Priest replies, No son, you may not, That’s utter disrespect to our religion.

John goes back to his friend & tells him what the good Priest told him.

Peter says, I am not surprised, You asked the wrong question. Let me try.

Peter goes up to the Priest & asks , “ Father, May I pray while I smoke ?”

To which the Priest eagerly replies, By all means son, You can always pray whenever you want to.

Professor said, The reply you get depends on the question you ask. I hope you will not forget this joke all your life.

The young man said, Yes sir I will follow your advice & I will remember this joke all my life. He walked away.

Professor asked me did you like my advice or joke ?

Smilingly I said both, you are great professor , Man with words of wisdom.

As soon as the young man left, Professor started the lecture on the importance of asking the right questions, Asking questions is the best way to get an answer but rarely does anybody go about asking them. There is the probably apocryphal story of William Randolph Hearst, the publishing magnate, sending a telegram to a leading astronomer asking, "Is there life on Mars? Please cable 1000 words." The astronomer's reply was "Nobody knows" - repeated 500 times!

The right kind of question always gets the right kind of response. If you discover that you're not getting the right answers, it's time to bone up the art of effective questioning.

Professor continued his words of wisdom, Questions are asked to gain knowledge, understand things and discover needs. The art lies in knowing the right question to ask, at the right time and in a right way.

Professor was continuing his lecture, Thank god luckily his mobile started ringing,

Professor was silent for few minutes after receiving the phone.

I asked my friend, What happened professor, why are you silent, any problem,

Professor said No , Do you know this is the same boy who just visited & I advised him the importance of asking right question, I am silent because …

He is asking me, sir shall I quit my old job or shall I continue
