HOW TO REDUCE FOOD WASTAGE ?

 

Now I request you to share your veiws on "How to reduce Food Wastage" to the best of our abilites..

We know that there are 950 million people who go to bed without food everyday (U.N. food agency)! Are we doing anything about it? Do we realise that our kitchen wastage is one of the cause of food crisis?

Most of the people think It affects only poor people.. As long as we have enough money we don't have to worry, we can afford to buy and waste'. Yes, that's what most of us think. We cannot compromise with yesterday's left over food. That should go in the bin.

We always want fresh food everyday. Can't see the fridge being empty. It should be always filled with lots of food and drinks, don't care whether we really need it or not! What is the point in buying everything and storing it in the fridge for months? Seriously, sometimes we don't even know what is going out of date in the fridge. Finally it is binned!

For some people, cooking in abundance for a party is a prestigious issue. There is a saying,'there should always be enough food in your vessels even after the party winds off. Vessels shouldn't be empty in any house or at a party!' I think we have to bring and cook what we want and make use of it without wasting it.

How many times requests come from orphanages etc to feed them instead of wasting,who listens... grand gala parties food thrown into dust bins..It should start at home, I feel. When we teach our family to do so, it starts spreading to our neighbours, siblings , friend so on and so forth.

So lets start insisting on this effort today! don't want this situation again happening on any other land. I support fully for this aware against wasting food. I keep telling whenever I see some one wasting food. I see many put lot of food and when they cant eat the whole it have been thrown, but if we put limited and add to fill the hunger would be fine. The amount of food wasted at weddings,Anniversaries or birthday parties is criminal.

Dear Friends before to share your Ideas,opinions , Let me share an interesting incident on Food Wastage, Sri Sathya Sai Baba was once in Dharmakshetra in Mumbai accompanied by Swami Karunyananda.While Swamiji stayed in his apartment on the upper floor, Swami Karunyananda was given a room situated on the ground floor right beneath Baba's room.

Swami Karunyananda bolted his room door from inside & was looking out from

his window when he saw a very disturbing scene...

Just outside the compound wall, some children were vying with stray dogs to grab crumbs of food from discarded leaf – plates!!! This scene filled him with surprise as well as distress. "Is it so ironical that human beings were competing with dogs to eat the discarded food " As these thoughts were passing through his mind, there was a gentle touch onhis shoulder. He turned around & found Sathya Sai Baba smiling & looking

into his eyes!

Swami Karunyananda was flustered & said, "How could you enter my room when I

had bolted the door from inside?"

Baba countered, "If I want to come in, can mere bolts come in my way? I've

come to take you for meals."

"Swami, I'm troubled by a small doubt, Please just look there behind that wall where some

children are fighting with stray dogs to pick up crumbs of food from the garbage. How is it, Swami?"

Baba explained patiently, "They had spent their earlier lives in ease & luxury. They disdainfully ate from tables heavily laden with every kind of rich food, pecking a little from this & a little from that plate. They threw away much more than they ever ate, discarding precious food. Hence in this birth they're picking up what they had earlier so recklessly wasted & consigned to the garbage dump!!!"

Swami Karunyananda later referred to this incident during his speech on the occasion of the World Conference of Sathya Sai Organizations at Prasanthi Nilayam, when Swami was also present on the dias.

"In cultivating human values, emphasis should also be placed on avoiding wastage of money, food and time." (Sri Sathya Sai)
