India as a Tourist Destination is Scaling New Heights.

It’s great to know that India as a tourist destination is scaling new heights. Recently Globetrotters and tourists from around the world are warming up to the country's people and hospitality by voting India as the seventh-best destination in the world in the recent Conde Nast Readers' Travel Awards 2010, a head of countries like Thailand, Greece, Brazil and France. Last year, India stood at the 13th position.

According to the results, Turkey was adjudged the favourite holiday destination as people gave it top marks "for range of accommodation and that increasingly important component of any holiday: value for money" (Source Conde Nast Traveller website)

Egypt, in second position, scored highest on culture, while Australia in third position was voted for having the best climate. Italy at fourth position and Spain in sixth position were voted for having great food and restaurant offerings, while New Zealand at number five scored highest on environmental friendliness.

Another interesting fact is that Three Indian sites were added to the World Heritage list by the United Nations' cultural branch, UNESCO, this summer. They join 23 other sites in India which have already been listed by the organization .India is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

India scored highest for the warmth of its people and hospitality with a score of 94.44 on 100. "In the first seven months of this year, inbound arrivals have gone up by about 10%. Besides, India attracts the long haul travelers who spend on an average of 15 days.

India can definitely reach the top position. There is ample scope for tourism in India. Our country has everything, sea beaches, and islands, snow clad mountains, desert, cultural buildings, forts, wild life. India is a vast land and there are thousands of places one can visit. From North to South, East to West there are numerous places which one can see, each more beautiful than the other. It can become a dream destination for a tourist.

It is said that India has a wealth of amazing places that is to be seen and appreciated and having an unbeatable tourism potential, But then India receives far lesser tourists compared to other relatively smaller countries. Considering the fact that the Tourism Industry contributes largely to the countries total GDP, this is the time that the Government and concerned authorities should pay immediate attention to the problems that tourists and travelers face in our country.

Soon we have to improve the infrastructure which has not been updated from long time. The transportation and related facilities have yet to be modernized. If India wants to establish itself as a solid travel destination and increase tourism, government & concerned authorities should take steps to make the country more hospitable to foreign travelers.

Also our government should be cognizant of the different types of tourists that may want to visit India eco tourists, history buffs or those seeking meditative retreats. India should take advantage of the West's intrigue with Indian culture, including yoga, ayurvedic medicine and meditation, and market itself accordingly. Business and government interests should consider collaborating to improve and modernize India's infrastructure. Not only will this increase tourism, but it will also increase foreign investment.

Apart from improving the Infrastructure the concerned authorities should concentrate on improving the Air and rail-road connectivity to the tourist spot. Properly maintaining hygiene at the international standard. Honest and knowledgeable travel guides should be made available. Advertising internationally like Singapore, Dubai or Malaysia & promoting internationally through ads and offering other concession offers. Providing security at tourist spots & making the Visa & related process easy & early will be added advantages.

The time has come to realise that Tourism is definitely going to be future of India, Its not IT. It is just a matter of time that other East Asian countries may offer cheaper BPO facilities. However, no country can match India for its diversity, culture and people. Tourism is going to be our biggest asset. So lets start respecting and welcoming the tourist.
