Corruption is not related with Religion

It’s shocking to read that Delhi's Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari has appealed to Muslims to stay away from Anna Hazare and his anti corruption brigade. Further the Shahi Imam says the protesters of Anna Hazare’s movement are raising slogans such as 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram' which, according to him, are un-Islamic.

It was nice to read that many prominent Islamic scholars in India have reacted strongly to Shahi Imam Bukhari's statement. Let me make it clear that Mr Anna Hazare is not forcing to sing Vande Mataram on anyone & there is nothing wrong if Muslims joined the campaign launched by the social activist. Shahi Imam’s views are not based on religion or the Holy Book. It is very unfortunate that some Imams have a big scope to exercise their influence over Muslim society as they are supposed to regulate even their most private behaviour.

Loving one's country and its people is a good trait of Muslims, as our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has amply demonstrated. Expression of patriotism has nothing to do with worship, as there is neither prayer nor remembrance of God involved in it. Thus, it cannot be called a prohibited act.

Corruption is a mutual social problem not a religious slogan. Corruption is not related with religion. A corruption free society benefits one and all. Being an Indian Muslim it’s my right to fight corruption. Moreover, Islam orders us to do our best to become good citizens in the countries we live in. Muslims have to honor the laws of the country where they live as long as such laws do not contradict the teachings of Islam.

I sincerely request my fellow citizens from all sections of society to fight against corruption & also there are many important issues like illiteracy, unemployment, poverty etc in our country which need to be taken up by everyone, including the religious scholars.
