Let’s encourage & give a chance to other sports
Congrats to ace woman shuttler Saina Nehwal for creating history by becoming the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament, clinching the Indonesian Open title with a stunning victory over higher ranked Chinese Lin Wang in Jakarta.
Her triumph today is the best ever performance by any Indian woman and at par with All England Championship titles won by Prakash Padukone and her current coach Pullela Gopichand. It is a big moment in Indian badminton. It is a moment to cherish for Indian sports.
Hailing Saina's victory as an important milestone in Indian badminton, Badminton Association of India announced a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh (rupees not dollars) as recognition of her feat.
Is it not true that we, in India, take too much interest in Cricket neglecting other sports?
I am not against Cricket , But Cricket gets all the attention. All other sports have been totally neglected. Cricket the “richer” sport is getting richer and other sports are almost dying in India.
Being swayed by cricket mania, we have almost forgotten other sports. Many of us are ignorant of our national game and we need to remind people about Hockey and other games that are played in India. Still we need to prove our worth in Hockey and in other sports. Still we cannot find eleven persons in India who can qualify for Football World Cup.
Time has come to invest our energy and time in other sports too.
India has such a huge population, with a lot of untapped talent, which, if given a chance, can do wonders at international level
Beijing Olympic gold medal winner Abhinav Bindra had his personal shooting range for practice. He clearly stated that the facilities provided by the authority were below par. The media showed where Olympic bronze medal winner wrestler Sushil Kumar had his training. There were not even basic facilities. How do we expect our sportsperson and athletes to win medals and tournaments when they are not even provided with basic facilities?
Former India captain and Olympian Dhanraj Pillai has slammed the Hockey Federation of India for not promoting the game and lamented that cricket gets all the backing at the expense of other sports in India.
Everything is going for cricket and nothing for hockey or any other sport in India. Everyone concentrates only on promoting cricket. Mileage, publicity, sponsorship, name it and everything goes towards cricket, leaving barely half a per cent for other sports.
The legendary cricketer Kapil Dev also wanted achievers in other sports to be treated on par with cricketers, saying they need a better deal from the public and media. Cricket has got everything going for it in India in terms of organisation, money and publicity. Deserving achievers in other sports need far more media spotlight and a pat on the back."We do neglect other sports", Kapil Dev said. "The media is partly responsible".
Lack of government interest is also hurting the state of sports in India. Except cricket other sports is given the least priority.
Anju George won India's first-ever medal at the World championships but no sponsors knocked on her door.
Pankaj Advani is a World Champion in snooker and billiards. He is the winner of three world titles in billiards and snooker. he became the first player to complete a grand double by winning both the points format as well as the time format titles in the IBSF World Billiards champioinship in 2005. In spite of winning the world snooker title, He is still running from pillar to post for some financial help.
Vishwanathan Anand the undisputed king of Chess who single-handedly gave India too much of recognition in the Chess arena. Recently He won the chess Oscar for the sixth time. Despite being a highly accomplished sportsperson, Recognition in India eludes him. Youngsters don’t seem to relate to this super achiever.
There is never ending list of many such unsung heroes Like Bindra, Vijendra, Susheel Kumar & others who brought us Medals single-handedly in Olympics and Asian games are neglected.
If at all the Government is interested in boosting sports as a career, it should look beyond cricket.
The media has to play an important role in recognising and popularising sports other than cricket. Almost every news channel has cricket specialists discussing and analyzing cricket matches and other cricket related news everyday, while all other sports are wrapped up in few minutes.
Finally Lack of Encouragements from Public. We should make all efforts to promote games over and above cricket. Though most of us are fond of Cricket, this includes me as well, let us develop, love, respect and interest in few more games. Let us stop being single sports, Cricket loving people.
